Field Day Fun in Gillette, Wyoming with Brenda Valentine

By Brenda Valentine
First Lady of Hunting®

July 20, 2010

The Gillette, WY NWTF Chapter held its second annual field day at the Gillette Gun Club July 17. Pictured are a few of the NWTF volunteers helping some of the youth participants with registration.

There was even a real live gobbler on display beside the NWTF station. I wrangled the bird so some of the kids could check him out up close.

Thanks to the Wyoming DNR for bringing a nice display of hides, horns, and antlers of animals native to WY.

Exhibits and shooting of all kinds was free all day for every youth. Archery was one of the most popular activities.

Murphy Love, pictured on the right, is the Gillette chapter president and largely responsible for organizing this successful event.

Capable instructors offered shooting tips and safety practices.

The hunting dog demonstration was simply amazing.

All of that outdoor activity builds a healthy appetite.  NWTF volunteers manned the grill and fed the troops.

Shotgunning pro, Allen Tredwell, helped shooters get the hang of busting clays.

Some hot competitions took place at the BB gun station.

Turkey calling just seems to come natural to some folks like this young lady who quickly got the hang of using a box call.

Kids of all ages enjoyed walking from station to station trying out the various activities especially geared for them.

Jakes events are an excellent way for families to spend a fun day together.

Even the kids not hardly big enough to shoot or cast still had a good day outdoors.

Some participants got their first sweet taste of hitting a target as the pleased look on this participant shows.

Gender was certainly not an issue at this event.  Lots of mothers and daughters took part in the day's fun.

A big "Thank You" to all the organizations and volunteers that generously gave their time and resources so these youngsters could learn so many outdoor skills. An incomplete list of these includes:

  • Pokey's Bar-B-Q
  • National Wild Turkey Federation
  • Mule Deer Foundation
  • Wyoming Department of Natural Resources
  • Sportsmen from NE Wyoming
  • Gillette Gun Club
  • Pheasants Forever
  • Plus several others
