On Sept. 18, the Tennessee River Longbeards Chapter of the NWTF hosted a Jakes Day at the Holly Fork Shooting Complex.

Using a mouth call is tough at best but almost impossible with missing teeth.

The BB gun station was one of the favorites. Every kid had the opportunity to shoot as much as they wanted and get coached on safe gun handling.

There were lots of girls getting in on the fun of shooting and outdoor sports.

Of course lunch is always a popular part of the day and Mr. Crowder's grilled hamburgers and hotdogs were delicious.

Thanks to Sherriff, Monty Belew (yellow plaid shirt), once again the chairman of this event, for his time and dedication of helping the youth in this area. Also to the many sponsors that donated prizes so that each child got a gift during the drawing.

Kids of all ages enjoyed a free day of fun, learning and participating in a variety of outdoor skills.

Committee member, Lynn Anderson, started everyone off in a festive mood with custom face painting.

Yes, even us big kids!

TN State President, Keith Hickman, gave a turkey calling lesson prior to the calling contest. Each participant received a diaphragm mouth call thanks to Keith and Primos Game Calls.

Archery was another popular station. Many of the kids were shooting a bow for the first time.

Small gauge shotguns and light loads were used for the still target shooting.

The National Wild Turkey Federation, the Tennessee River Longbeards Chapter, the Holly Fork Shooting Complex, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and the Henry County Sheriff's Department all contributed to a day of teaching and inspiring this group of youngsters toward becoming safe and responsible hunters and conservationist. Classes and activities offered were; sporting dog demonstration, BB gun, 3-D archery, turkey calling, shotgun still target, 5 stand trap, and a turkey strutting contest. There was even a live gobbler on hand for those wanting a closer look.
